IT Band Treatment
Do you require IT band treatment? Knowing that you are experiencing issues with the IT band, or Iliotibial band, will initiate thoughts of delays or a complete stop of some of the activities that you like to do. Knowing that your knee may not be as healthy as it once was doesn't mean that there isn't treatment available.
Since IT band pain is one of the most common issues with those who run and jog, there are a number of treatments available that can help reduce the pain and possibly resolve the cause of the pain. When the IT band is displaced, pain will occur in the knee area (or hip in some cases) and not always does an over the counter pain reliever reduce the pain. This is when a more extensive treatment process is required.
Many individuals who are active in sports and other activities that place a high level of movement on the IT band, have a much higher chance of experiencing IT band pain than those who do not participate in activities that require a high usage of the knees. Sports is not the only possible cause of IT band pain as it can be due to leg and/or foot abnormalities or even weak muscles. There is IT band treatment that can work to help resolve most causes of IT band issues.
When the IT band has become inflamed, swollen or affected in another way, treatment is required. The type of treatment that will be provided will depend upon the sufferer's individual circumstances. The IT band treatment can be one type of therapy or several types to ensure that the proper treatment is rendered to the IT band.
If the pain is at a minimal level for the individual, the usual recommendation given is RICE or rest, ice, compression and elevation. Together, these 4 methods will help to reduce the inflammation and the pain. Some other forms of IT band treatment are:
- stretching
- IT band foam roller
- IT band/brace
- compression wrap
- ultrasound therapy
- stimulation from electrodes
- physical therapy
- tissue massage
- surgery
Many who are advised to rest and don't want to "rest" should at least minimize the time they are doing the particular activity that increases IT band pain. In addition, they should also follow the RICE plan as often as possible. For the best treatment, it is highly recommended that if someone is experiencing knee pain to seek guidance from a medical professional to properly diagnosis the cause of the pain and recommend the best treatment possible.
Many times, treatment includes several methods of therapy to ensure that the patient is reducing the pain and taking preventative measures to reduce further damage to the IT band. Stretching, strengthening along with a orthotic device can help the patient get through each day. Treatment can be minimal and last a short period or it may be extensive and last for several months. Knee pain can be very painful and when caused by the IT band, IT band treatment should be rendered as soon as possible.
